Clip in Extension Hair Fine Thin Hair and Extensions

Q: Can women with fine or thin hair get hair extensions?

A: Yes. Although, those who have fine or thin hair must be dealt with differently than others with more “normal” hair texture and density. Persons with fine/thin hair have to be careful of extension techniques that put stress on the hair they have and they are more susceptible to things like traction hair loss. (This is hair loss caused by the added weight of extension hair or by the pull of glue and braiding common to some extension techniques).

I personally recommend that women with fine or thin hair look into wig salons that offer “clip-on” or “clip-in” extensions. These are wefts of hair that are attached to the existing hair (inside the perimeter hairline) using barette-style clips. They are much gentler to the fine or thin hair and scalp, and can help to add length and fullness, and can create the impression of a lush head of hair.

The best thing about clip-in extensions is their ease of application and removal. It is usually a matter of parting the hair, clipping in the extension wefts (as many as desired to achieve the wanted look) and the styling the hair to blend the wefts with the natural hair.

The benefits of this technique as opposed to wearing wigs or using fusion or track and sew methods of extensions are simple:

The clip-in extensions allow you to have your own natural hairline, and can create a more natural-looking result (or can add extra dimension to your natural color by choosing highlighting shades of extensions).

The clip-in extensions don’t require glues or braided tracks to be used which can be uncomfortable, and can cause hair loss with prolonged or repeated applications.
